A door off the track is unstable
Garage door cable repair and off-track calls from Gardner have a shared rule: stop the opener. If one side of the door is higher than the other, if you see a gap between the door and the frame, or if rollers are standing outside the metal track, the door is no longer a controlled piece of equipment. Another cycle can fold a panel, twist the track, or drop the door.
Cables are the link between the bottom corners of the door and the drums up by the springs. When a cable frays, jumps the drum, or snaps, that corner is no longer carried. The spring on the other side keeps pulling. The door racks. People describe it as the door suddenly looking diagonal, or as a loud tick followed by a slanted panel.
Same-day help is often available for a door that is off the track or hanging open. Say so when you call. If the door is partway up and crooked, keep people, pets, and cars out from under it.
What a bad cable looks like
You can usually see the cables without touching them. Look from the floor, not from a ladder parked under the drums.
- A cable that has unspooled and tangled beside the drum
- A cable with broken strands, a fuzzy patch, or heavy rust
- One bottom corner of the door sitting lower than the other
- A drum with cable piled on one edge instead of wound in even layers
- A bottom bracket that is bent where the cable end attaches
The photo on this page shows cables on the drums next to torsion springs, which is the normal arrangement. Yours should look orderly. A bird’s nest of wire is not orderly. Do not tug the loose end to “tighten it up.” The spring is on the other end of that system.
Cables usually fail with a spring problem or after years of rubbing a dry bearing. Tell the contractor if you also heard a bang, because the spring may be the real start of the story and the cable is the damage that followed.
Rollers and bent track
Rollers are the wheels that ride inside the track. Plastic rollers crack. Steel rollers lose their bearings and grind. A roller that has left the track is both a symptom and a hazard. The door can be hanging on the remaining rollers and the cables.
Track is the vertical metal on each side of the opening and the curve that turns overhead. It bends when a car kisses the door, when a cable lets go and the door twists, or when a loose bracket lets the track spread. A small dent at bumper height is a common Gardner repair after a wet evening and a tight garage. A twist through the curve is more serious. The door will bind there every time it tries to turn the corner, and the opener will either stop or force it.
Loose track lag screws in the jamb, especially in older wood framing around Templeton and Athol, let the whole vertical track walk outward. The rollers then hop off at the same spot every day. Tightening those screws is not a homeowner project while the door is under spring tension. The contractor loosens the right things in the right order.
Stop the opener, then call
If the door is crooked, unplug the opener or switch off its breaker if you can do that without passing under a hanging door. Do not pull the red release cord on a crooked or off-track door. Disconnecting the trolley on a racked door can let it fall. Do not put a ladder under the open section to “see the drum better” if the door is already out of line.
Useful details for the call:
- Is the door fully closed, fully open, or stopped in the middle?
- Which side is high, as you look at the door from inside?
- Can you see a loose cable?
- Did a vehicle hit the door?
- Is the opener still trying to run?
- What town is the house in?
Baldwinville, West Gardner, Hubbardston, and downtown Gardner all use the same hardware. The town matters for the drive, not for the diagnosis. Name it.
How cable work ties to the rest of the door
A cable job that ignores the springs leaves the new cable to die the same way. A track job that ignores a bent panel leaves the door binding. Ask the contractor to say whether the springs, the bottom brackets, and the rollers are part of this repair or a later one. If the panels are crushed, garage door repair may turn into a section replacement or a new door. If the opener jumped its sprocket while forcing a stuck door, add that to the opener conversation.
When the door is back on the track, ask them to run it through a full open and close and to test the safety reverse. The goal is a door that travels evenly, with cables seated on the drums, not a door that merely looks shut.
Call the number on this page. Describe the slant, the cable, and the town. Then stay out from under the door until someone who does this work is there.
Questions to settle before you call
The door is crooked and there is a gap on one side. What happened?
A cable has often come off the drum or snapped, so one side of the door is no longer supported. Stop the opener. A crooked door can fall out of the track if it keeps moving.
Can I push the rollers back into the track?
No. The cables and springs are under tension, and an off-track door is unstable. Forcing it back can bend the track further or drop the door. Call and wait.
The cable looks rusty but the door still moves. Can it wait?
A fuzzy or rusty cable is a warning, not a decoration. It can let go under load. Call and describe it. Waiting until it snaps is how a simple cable becomes a bent door and a broken spring.
Do rollers and track get replaced with the cable?
Often the contractor replaces or reseats more than the cable, because the door came out of line. Ask what they are changing and what it will cost before they start.
